Backup, restore and migration

Taking a full backup, restoring it and moving the site to another address.

Taking a backup

Open the JustNow Backups → Backup & Migration tab.

  1. Give the package name (optional). The date and a random suffix are added automatically.
  2. Choose what to include:
    • Database: posts, pages, settings, users. Only this site's prefixed tables are included.
    • Media (wp-content/uploads): usually the largest part of the backup.
    • Plugins and Themes: optionally only the active ones.
    • Other: mu-plugins, languages and other folders in wp-content.
    • WordPress core and wp-config.php: keep them on for a full migration.
  3. Pro Exclusions: list large, unnecessary locations such as caches, other backup plugins' folders and node_modules (the * wildcard can be used). Separate extensions with semicolons (e.g. log;tmp).
  4. Click Start backup. Follow the progress in the window that opens and close it with Done when it finishes. Do not close the page while it runs.
In the free editionthere is no backup size limit; one package can be kept in storage at a time and a backup can be restored only on the site it was taken from. Keeping several packages, exclusion rules and migration to another site are in Pro.
Do not keep backups only on the serverIf the server fails, the backup goes with it. Download the package to your computer or send it to the cloud with Remote Storage.

Packages

For each backup in the package list:

  • Download: downloads the package to your computer.
  • Restore: installs the package on this site.
  • Delete: permanently deletes the package from disk.

The summary cards at the top show the table count, package count, total storage size and the date of the last backup.

Restore

  1. Click Restore on the package in the list.
  2. Choose what to restore:
    • Database: returns content and settings to the state in the package.
    • Files: writes the theme, plugin and media files from the package over the current ones.
    • wp-config.php: off by default. Keep it off when moving to another site; if you turn it on, the target site's database connection details change.
  3. Type CONFIRM (or ONAYLIYORUM) in the confirmation box and start.
Your live site is protectedThe database is first loaded into shadow tables; if there are no errors, they replace the live tables in a single step. If something fails, your live site is not changed. Restoring the database also restores the users from the package, so log in again with the credentials from the package if needed.

In the free edition you can only restore this site's own backup.

Migrating to another site Pro

To move site A to address B:

  1. On site A, take a full backup (database + all files) and download the package.
  2. At address B, install a fresh WordPress, then install JustNow Backups and activate your Pro license.
  3. On site B, upload the downloaded package with Import package (details).
  4. Click Restore on the package. Leave Adapt to this site (address, path and table prefix) on and wp-config.php off.
  5. When the restore finishes, log in to site B with site A's credentials. If you use permalinks or a caching plugin, save their settings once.

The Adapt to this site option converts every link in the database (including those inside serialized and JSON data) and file paths to the new address, sets home/siteurl, and adapts the table prefix if it differs. This way the moved site does not redirect to the old address.

LicenseAfter the migration, activate the Pro license again at address B. If site A will be shut down, click Remove license there first (moving a license).

Importing a package Pro

The Import package area adds a .zip or .sql file taken from another site to storage. The maximum upload size is your server's PHP upload limit and is shown under the area.

You can copy larger packages to the storage folder on the server over FTP/SFTP; the package then appears in the list automatically.

Old tables (jnb_)

The live tables from before a restore are kept with the jnb_ prefix. If you notice a problem after the restore, they can be used to go back manually. If the site works fine, free up space with Delete old tables.
